CHEBOYGAN, MI -- The hot spot in Cheboygan Wednesday was outside of the now-former Woolworth Building.
Several people came out to get a glance of the community-claimed eyesore as crews tore it down.
The mayor was there and he said this is a project that has been in the works for close to 10 years.
The building was condemned because of mold problems, the Cheboygan Downtown Development Authority purchased it, and the city, along with grants, paid for the destruction, which carried a pricetag of $175,000.
"It was very much a priority to us when we listened to people, went out and got some feedback from our community, and this was a high priority of getting this out of the community and starting something new," said Mayor Richard Sangster.
Sangster says it could take a couple weeks for the building to be completely gone, but once it is, the city will consider what will be done with it.
He said the plans are to make it an event center for public use.
