GAYLORD, MI -- The Gaylord-Otsego County Fire Department says they have contained an apartment fire, and they're considering it a lucky save.
Fire crews responded to Aspen Apartments on North Street in Gaylord around 3:15 Tuesday afternoon. A resident called 911 when she saw smoke coming into her living room as she was getting ready for work.
Crews arrived, and fought the blaze that was between the first and second floor of the complex. They cut into the ceiling and the side of the building, pulled out the smoldering insulation, and had it contained within 45 minutes.
Fire Chief David Duffield says it appears a cigarette tossed from the balcony of a second floor apartment went through a vent, into the ceiling, and had been smoldering for hours before crews arrived.
He says residents are lucky the fire didn't spread and engulf the entire building.
Nobody was hurt.
