Seniors targeted in phone scam

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County officials are warning the community about a phone scam that is targeting the elderly.

Officials say a woman is calling senior citizens and asking them to make a donation to the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging, the only problem? The Commission on Aging isn't holding a fundraiser.

So far only a few victims reported the scam, but the department's director, Georgia Durga is fearful there could be more. She says it's especially disturbing because many of her elderly clients don't have very much money.

Durga says, "I know a lot of clients like our services, and if they thought we need money they would try to make a donation to help us. So it's especially unsettling to know someone would prey on seniors."

Grand Traverse County Commissioners will talk about the scam at their meeting on Wednesday night. The sheriff's office is aware of the scam, but since no one has filed a police report, a formal investigation has not begun.
