A Northern Michigan woman is in jail tonight accused of murdering her own mother.
Sunday night, police discovered the body of Amelia Gregory at her Charlevoix Township home.
Investigators believe her daughter, 74-year-old Sandra Gregory, killed her.
Amelia Gregory's body is in Grand Rapids where a forensic autopsy will be performed.
Police are hoping that'll answer how the 94-year-old died.
As for her daughter Sandra -- she's facing charges that could lock her up for life.
"Open murder-homicide, which is a life offense," explained Sheriff Don Schneider when talking about Sandra Gregory’s charges.
74 year old Sandra Gregory has been arrested and is in jail for killing her 94 year old mother, Amelia Gregory. Police were alerted of a possible deadly situation Sunday evening at a home off of US-31, South of Charlevoix. When they arrived they say it was clear there had been foul play.
“There was a tremendous amount of blood at the scene. We had some witness statements that some phone calls were made that led us to believe that the individual we have arrested committed the crime, and that's the way we preceded," explained Sheriff Schneider.
Sandra was the caregiver to her mother. I spoke with a few people who said it was common to see Sandra walking with her mother around town and into local shops, but nothing ever appeared to be wrong. Sheriff Schneider says it's too early in the investigation to determine a motive and right now, they're waiting for the forensic autopsy results from Grand Rapids to find out how Amelia died.
“To me, more bizarre is that how we understand it today, a 74 year old female would take her 94 year old mother's life," said Schneider.
Sheriff Schneider says there are indications the suspect tried to take her own life after killing her mother. Sandra Gregory will face homicide-open murder charges, which have a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The Charlevoix County Prosecutor plans for Sandra Gregory to be arraigned in the 90th District Court Tuesday.
Sheriff Schneider says the suspect was evaluated after her arrest.
Community members I spoke with off camera today were shook up after hearing the news and say they can't believe this happened.

The Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office has arrested 74-year-old Sandra Gregory for the murder of her 94-year-old mother, Amelia Gregory.
Sheriff Don Schneider says deputies were dispatched to a home in Charlevoix Township and found a dead woman Sunday.
Witness statements and evidence collected at the scene led police to believe Amelia Gregory was murdered.
The cause of death is being withheld at this time pending the autopsy being performed in Grand Rapids.
Sheriff's investigators and the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab in Grayling will continue to investigate.
Charlevoix County Prosecutor John Jarema authorized a felony warrant for homicide – open murder. This charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. The warrant was issued by the 90th District Court in Charlevoix.
