TRAVERSE CITY -- A Traverse City couple has discovered the perfect recipe for success in making the sweetest tasting jelly out of local wines.
7&4's Kate Fox has more on Stone Cottage Fine Foods and how "fun" seems to be the essential ingredient in the kitchen.
Owner of Stone Cottage Fine Foods Gayle Gallagher says, "When people try the flavors and their reaction, sometimes they’re surprised...their eyes get this big or they laugh, because the flavors on some of them are just a big pow!"
Gayle and Joe Gallagher say they wanted to create something that would combine their love of food and commitment to this beautiful, bountiful area.
After giving it some thought, a light bulb went off and they were set on wine jelly.
Gallagher says, "We thought what a perfect thing for this area because there's over 30 wineries right here in the traverse area."
So for the fun of it they whipped up a couple test batches.
Gallagher explains, "We just started inviting friends and family over, to try to experiment, we had lots of people being happy to be out guinea pigs for that."
The result was incredible and then came the next piece of the puzzle: The Cottage Food Law.
She says, "That was the perfect venue for us to get started, because we were starting on shoe string and you can make it out of your own home."
It's all made right in the kitchen of the Gallagher’s stone cottage.
They create unique jelly flavors that leave your mouth watering.
Gallagher says the best part is utilizing local resources.
She says, "We have selected a few wines we like from different wineries, and the purchase of the wines from them help support local economy."
The Gallagher's hope to use any profit they make to help kids in need.
She explains, "Either the Child and Family Services or Homeless Teens we want to take some of our profits and help benefit those kids, it's a huge growing problem here."
They plan to expand the product line and add flavors like orange chocolate. They also want to start creating beer jellies and a new line of salad dressings.
