TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is handing out nearly a million dollars to local charities, helping hand organizations and government entities.

Under an agreement with the state, the tribe gives out 2 percent of its video gaming revenue twice a year.

Today's awards total just over $978,000.

That money is split up between 58 projects in the greater Grand Traverse area.

One of those receiving money, The Father Fred Foundation, $75,000 to help people with utility shut offs.

David Abeel, Director of Development for Father Fred said, "That will mean, we will be able to help about 300 families, 300 families with utility shut offs and other difficulties that they're having in that whole genre... water, utilities, heating."

In addition to providing financial assistance for those in need, the Father Fred Foundation distributes thousands of dollars worth of food and clothing every day.

In fact, the annual Frostbite Food-drive starts this Friday.
