TRAVERSE CITY -- Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), was in Traverse City Saturday, focusing on the impact agriculture has on Michigan.
Senator Stabenow is the new Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. She met with local fruit processors and producers who are creating agriculture jobs in Michigan. She then met with local shoppers while touring the Indoor Farmers Market in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons.
“Agriculture supports one in four jobs in our state. As Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, it’s my job to help those companies stay successful and to keep growing. Today’s visit was an opportunity for me to meet with some of our great Northern Michigan fruit growers and processors and listen to local residents at Traverse City’s wonderful farmers market,” said Senator Stabenow.
Agriculture is Michigan's second largest industry and generates more than $71.3 billion in revenue each year. It also accounts for one out of every four jobs in the state.
Area leaders were on hand for Saturday's event and commented on how important it is to have Senator Stabenow at the helm of the Agriculture Committee..
“As Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Stabenow will be instrumental in drafting a new Farm Bill which will shape the nation’s agricultural economy for generations to come," said Doug Luciani, President and CEO, Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce. "Based on her track record and previous commitment to this region, we are confident her involvement at this level will be of great value.”
Senator Stabenow is the most knowledgeable and experienced person to represent our agricultural community in Michigan. As Ag Chair she will represent our interest in the next farm bill as we make investments and create new jobs,” commented Donald Coe, Donald Coe, Managing Partner, Black Star Farms said:
