Kittens thrown out of a moving truck survive

CHARLEVOIX -- Executive Director of the Charlevoix Humane Society Jodi Adam says, "It is appalling, we get very frustrated by the way animals get treated."

Adam's concern is related to Tuesday afternoon when an upset woman came into the shelter with a damaged crate of five kittens.

The woman was driving on 1-31 when she saw a crate of kittens being thrown out of the window of a moving truck just north of Boyne Falls.

Adam says "the truck was heading south, she was heading north so we really can't even do anything to prosecute or whatever but it is a crime to be throwing animals out of windows of vehicles."

This is a crime that has happened more than three times this year, kittens found in boxes on the side of the road.

Adam remembers the last woman who brought in a box of kittens that had been abandoned and says,"the last one, the gal brought six kittens in and she said there were eight but three were already dead on the road."

Already this year almost 500 abandoned animals have been brought to the shelter.

Adam says that people need to know that they have alternative options and there are shelters out there willing to help, "they come to us because they can't afford it to feed them so we'll give them food. If they cant afford to get them spade and neutered we'll figure something out. If it's because they don't want to be bothered I don't know what to say to them because I don't understand that. I don't understand someone who would have a pet realizing the animal doesn't have a choice, they don't, they come into our lives by our choice, not theirs and we owe it to them."
