A local hospital helps people balance life and health

The kids are back in class, they have their back to school physicals complete and it's a great time for you to take a moment and check your own health.

Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort wants you to do just that with their 14th annual Fall Wellness day.

They offer everything from body fat measurements to mammograms.

That's the subject of tonight's Buddy Check Report.

Studio on Main owner Anna Mallien has been involved in fitness her whole life.

So it was a natural fit when she opened a Pilates and yoga studio in Frankfort a few years ago.

But as the boss, it was the first time in her life she had also had to balance the books.

Mallien says, "I always had health insurance with my job so I never thought about it as such an expensive part of a budget."

Even though she had a history of breast issues, the single mother found her yearly mammogram was out of reach.

Mallien says, "I just told her I couldn't afford it.  Last year I was just in no position to do that.  Not having insurance, you almost think about going to the doctor as a luxury."

But Anna learned she qualified for a free mammogram through Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital's annual Fall Wellness Day.

Radiographer Janice Provo says, "I believe these are patients who otherwise wouldn't have come here if we didn't have this service.  Women have historically been more of the caregivers, care providers, and they forget they need to take care of themselves."

For a woman who encourages wellness in others, the free screening was just what she needed to balance body and mind.

Mallien says, "It was an incredible stress relief.  Knowing you can have the test, that you can have a mammogram is stress relief in itself.  You always think it's not going to be you."

Luckily for Anna it wasn't her.  In fact 38 women got free mammograms in the program last year.  Fortunately none of them had cancer.

The free mammogram is just one of the screenings available at Paul Oliver's Fall Wellness Day.  Others include blood pressure, body fat index measurements, cholesterol, colorectal, diabetes A1C, hearing, men's health exam, osteoporosis, PSA, Pulmonary function, vision, women's health including pap test and mammogram.  You do need to pre-qualify for some of these screenings.  The Wellness Day is Saturday October 23rd.  Call Paul Oliver for the details at 231-882-2232.
