TRAVERSE CITY -- Recently several sidewalks in Traverse City have been repaved, but others have not.
Some of you wondered why the city is paying for only certain streets.
Doug Hillock is the owner of Christopher Jon hair salon in Traverse City. He says he's sick of the uneven, cracked sidewalk in front of his business. Two of his clients had to be taken to the hospital after falling on the sidewalk.
"I look out for their safety and they should be safe from getting out of their car to getting back in their car," said Hillock. "I'm always kind of holding my breath to see if they get to their car."
Hillock says the city filled some of the cracks with asphalt patching it up last year, but he's not happy with the result.
If the property owner wants the sidewalk repaved they must pay 50% of the cost.
That's something the owner of a house on 11th Street did. But she says she doesn't understand why she had to pay $400 for her sidewalk and others don't.
"When you hear that they're paying for some people and not others, that doesn't seem right," said Amy Slack.
"If they're not on our list but still want the sidewalk done we can do it on a 50-50 basis," said City Manager Ben Bifoss.
Bifoss said the list is generated by snow removers and the worst streets are at the top.
The city has $100,000 to spend on sidewalks each year.
Bifoss said there's one more way to get your sidewalk redone. If your sidewalk is adjacent to a street that is already under construction, they will repair that sidewalk at the same time for free.
