GRAND HAVEN -- A Benzie County man is dead after getting caught in a rip current in Lake Michigan while on vacation.

It happened around 3:00 p.m. Thursday near Grand Haven State Park.

76-year-old Richard Habermas of Lake Ann was swimming with his wife when he went under.

It took about ten minutes for a bystander to find Habermas and pull him out of the water.  An off-duty nurse and two doctors performed CPR.

Habermas was pronounced dead at the hospital.
