OCEANA CO. -- Another community takes the first step in voting against a proposed offshore wind farm in Lake Michigan, which would be built off the shores of Oceana and Mason Counties.

Following a public meeting Wednesday night in Hart, Oceana County's Planning Commission adopted a resolution to not endorse Scandia Offshore Wind's proposal for offshore wind turbines and studies by a vote of 7-2.

During the meeting, Larry Byl, Oceana Planning Commissioner and County Board Commissioner noted that in Oceana County, Lake Michigan usage is almost solely recreational and building an offshore wind power plant would be detrimental to that.

The Oceana County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on the planning commission's recommendation of the Scandia proposal on Thursday, August 12 in its regularly scheduled meeting.

The Lake Michigan P.O.W.E.R. Coalition is calling on Oceana County's Board of Commissioners to adopt the planning commission's resolution and reject Scandia's proposal.

Mason County rejected Scandia's proposals in June.

Scandia wants to put 200 wind turbines in Lake Michigan a few miles from the shoreline.

While approval from the communities is not necessary for the project to move foward, Scandia has said it would not pursue hte project unless it has local support.
