MONTMORENCY CO., MI -- An update on the woman accused of leaving her infant baby in a dumpster for dead.
Krystal Taylor was back in court today.
Gruesome photos of the baby that was put in the dumpster off of Matthews Road in Montmorency County were displayed in court today. Krystal Taylor had her preliminary hearing, she's the one accused of placing her newborn baby in the dumpster. Five witnesses came to the stand, one being her boyfriend's mother.
"I couldn't believe that someone could do that to a child."
Vicky Berney said she couldn't believe the news when she first heard it on TV. Berney and her husband live in Montmorency County. Her son, Erick, and his girlfriend, Krystal Taylor, lived with them. Berney took the stand and said she didn't know Taylor was pregnant until a sheriff's department officer brought her home. Berney testified that her son and daughter told her that Taylor had a baby in their home, and that's when she approached Krystal.
“When the baby was born, the cord was wrapped around its neck, and it wasn't breathing, and then she tried giving it CPR, and it wouldn't breathe, and that was the end of our conversation."
A man who worked at the oil well site and found the baby in the dumpster also testified.
"I noticed the back and legs that appeared to be an infant."
According to Francis D'Angela, who works with the Michigan State Police Grayling Crimelab, it appeared the baby was thrown in the dumpster in a plastic bag. It became visible because of what she calls critter activity.
“Information was given to us that there were crows and ravens present so we're thinking that is what occurred," said D’Angela.
Throughout the hearing, Krystal Taylor had her head down, or was looking away from the images displayed. She also had a tissue to wipe away tears.
The Montmorency County Medical Investigator and a Montmorency County Sheriff's Office Sergeant also testified.
The judge has continued the preliminary hearing to august 20th.
Krystal Taylor's boyfriend, Erick Berney, has been charged with aiding and abetting.
