MANISTEE --

Crews began salvaging a sunken charter boat near the First Street Pier in Manistee Monday.

The U.S. Coast Guard station Manistee was called to the area by a passer-by around 5:00 Saturday morning,  when the boat "Kid-A-Gain" started taking on water.

Seven people were rescued from the water, but the first mate, 55-year-old Michael Bachus, required CPR and was later pronounced dead. Everyone was wearing life jackets.

An autopsy revealed Bachus had 4 rib fractures, a cracked vertebrae and internal bleeding from a cut in the Aortic artery.

Bachus is a retired Sergeant Major from the United States Marine Corp. and a veteran of the first Gulf War. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Two other people in the boat were taken to West Shore Medical Center.  Four others were treated and released.
