TCAPS Cuts Liaison Officer Funding

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Area Public Schools will no longer provide funding for their Liaison Officer Program.

Over the past few years, the school has forked over $100,000 a year to help support the program. For TCAPS to keep their liaison officers, the coast must now be entirely covered by City and County dollars.

“After careful consideration, we made a decision and a recommendation to the board that, as part of the cuts, this $100,000 for police liaisons would be eliminated. The board agreed,” said TCAPS superintendent James Feil.

Traverse City has annually received $25,000 in reimbursement for their liaison officer service. Working with a tight budget, city leaders are trying to decide if they will still support the program without help from TCAPS.

“The police chief and my recommendation is that we do, but there was some fairly spirited discussion by commissioners about whether that was an appropriate path,” said City Manager Ben Bifoss.

On June 7, city commissioners will hand in their budget for approval, and TCAPS officials will find out if city leaders decided to exclusively fund the Liaison Officer Program.
