ALGONAC (AP) -- Coast Guard crews from the U.S. and Canada are scheduled to conduct icebreaking operations on the St. Clair River to mitigate possible flooding because of a nine-mile ice jam.

The work is expected to begin Monday morning and could last several days. U.S. Coast Guard cutters involved include the Neah Bay, Mobile Bay and Mackinaw. Also participating will be the Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Samuel Risley.

These icebreaking operations will include the north and south channels of the St. Clair River and could disrupt Harsens Island ferry service.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the work will prevent flooding along both sides of the St. Clair River and restore water flow to Lake St. Clair, which has experienced a dramatic drop in water levels this month.
