ANN ARBOR (AP) -- A four-month University of Michigan exhibition on images of race in America and featuring two contrasting depictions of Michelle Obama is ending this week.
The Clements Library's show "Reframing the Color Line" concludes Friday. One image shows the first lady in her official portrait, smiling and wearing a sleeveless dress with a string of pearls.
In the background is a painting of Thomas Jefferson, the slave-owning author of the Declaration of Independence.
The second image is a cartoon from a cover of The New Yorker magazine showing Michelle Obama in camouflage pants with an assault rifle and Barack Obama in a tunic and turban.
The exhibition includes images of black people that range from demeaning to sympathetic.
