With the temperatures in the single digits in many areas across Northern Michigan, don't forget to protect your pets.

Animal experts warn many kinds of dogs cannot tolerate the cold for prolonged periods of time.  Mike Cherry  from the Cherryland Humane Society has one way to determine if it is too cold for your four legged friends.

"If you go outside and you have your warmest coat on, you feel cold, then your pet is also going to feel cold. You want to be very, very careful because not only does the air temperature influence what your pet can tolerate, but also the wind-chill factor."

Some of the larger breeds of dogs can tolerate lower temperatures as long as they have a warm dog house with hay or other insulation.  Officials warn however, to make sure your pet always has a source of drinking water available, and you need to check it often to make sure it doesn't freeze over.
