LANSING -- The Michigan Legislature is expected to have a long day Thursday as it considers possible changes to education law in the state.

The proposals include allowing more charter schools and tying teacher evaluations to student test scores. They are among the several measures lawmakers might pass in pursuit of more money for schools from the federal stimulus package.

The Obama administration has started a competition called Race to the Top. States that make dramatic changes to try and improve their schools could win millions of dollars.

Michigan would get up to $400 million if it is selected as one of the competition's winners.

States must apply for Race to the Top money in January.
