A fire nearly destroyed the Busy Bee Market

JOHANNESBURG -- Three months after nearly being destroyed by fire, the Busy Bee Market in Johannesburg is re-opening their doors for business.

On August 22 fire caused more than $150,000 in damage to the market that has been a landmark in the small town for 14 years.

"I got the phone call and I just dropped my head on the table and really didn't know what to do," says Linda Licht, owner of the Busy Bee Market.

After endless work for three months the Busy Bee is back in business.

"It's been very hard work, very hectic work," Licht said. "they had to tear off the roof, the rafters, the walls, all of the groceries, the liquor, it all had to be destroyed."

The grand re-opening is a welcoming sight for many customers including Joyce Clark who lives a block away from the store.

"I stop in here everyday," Clark said. "There's always something I need or want whether it be a birthday card or a loaf of bread. And, I don't have to drive 16 miles one way."

For customers, like so many people in Johannesburg, the Busy Bee Market means so much because it's the only market for miles around.

For gasoline drivers have to travel to Vienna 6 miles away. For groceries and other necessities, customers had to commute upwards of 16 miles one way either to Gaylord or Lewiston.

"That's extra time out of my day, extra gas," Clark said.

"Everywhere we went it was 'when are you opening, when are you opening?" Licht said. "I didn't realize how needed I was here, how need the store was."

Licht says it was the community support that helped them get back on their feet so quickly. While she did have insurance she says this was one ordeal she hopes she'll never have to relive ever again.

To welcome back their customers, the Busy Bee Market is hosting a three day grand re-opening event beginning Friday, November 20. In addition, they'll have various free raffles and free refreshments.

The Busy Bee Market is located at 10747 M-32 East in Johannesburg.
