A grant from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will put More Books on Shelves
Central Lake Schools will be receiving a $13,000 grant from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians to improve the libraries at the elementary and high school.
Superintendent Steve Paliewicz says the average age of the library books is 23 years.
With the grant money, new books will be added to the elementary school library.
At the high school, two databases will be added. One database will allow students to browse millions of magazine articles, newspaper articles and other reference materials.
Librarian Susan Shay says the students will be able to get reliable information efficiently without the danger of computer viruses or inappropriate material on the internet.
The other database, called Ancestry Library, will allow students to trace their family trees.
The Genealogy Club, along with Social Studies and History classes will take advantage of the database for projects.
This database will also be accessible to the community through the schools' website.
In addition to the new library materials, a rotating exhibit of Native American artwork is planned for the high school and elementary school libraries.
All of the art on display will be the work of local artists.
Superintendent Paliewicz says funds have been set aside to allow the community to meet with the artists and students at special events which he hopes will take place at least twice in the next year.
