LANSING (AP) -- Michigan prisoners and the people who guard them will have to stop smoking by next Sunday. The state's 41 prisons go tobacco-free Monday February 2nd. Until then, inmates and prison staff can continue smoking in outdoor prison areas, although they haven't been able to smoke inside since the 1990s. Corrections officials began moving toward the total tobacco ban a year ago, when lawmakers voted to require prisons be tobacco free. State prison spokesman Russ Marlan says 40 to 50 percent of the state's 48,500 inmates smoke, as do 20 to 25 percent of prison employees. Prisons offered inmates smoking cessation classes.
