Doris Brackett reflects on inauguration

BELLAIRE -- Doris Brackett of Bellaire watched - as millions did - to see President Barack Obama officially become the 44th President of the United States.

"He sounds like a very good man to me and that's what we were after," Brackett said.

On the same day Brackett turned 105-years-old. As she watched the pomp and circumstance of the inauguration on her TV, she's reminded of those who have served in office in year's past.

"The one that stands out the most in my mind is Franklin Delano Roosevelt for some reason, I thought he did a lot for the country," Brackett said. "During that time there was a war and he was the one that started Social Security which was a big step."

Brackett has seen 18 presidents come and go; Obama is the 19th. She has lived through years are hardships and war.

"When I lived in Detroit, and then we moved up here in 1939, I remember people living, even in the winter time, in crates down by the riverside," Brackett said. "There were bread lines and the situation was bad."

She has seen the times when the thought of this nation electing an African-American president was merely a dream to many. But, despite it all, now at 105-years-old, Doris Beckett says she's quite happy. Her family spans from her daughter down to 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Doris says there's no simple secret to the long life that she has lived, but says she just lives life taking it one day at a time. For more than ten years, Brackett volunteered at the tourism bureau in Traverse City until her 100th birthday a few years ago. Brackett says she mostly stays youthful by rooting on her beloved Detroit Red Wings.
