Economic crisis leads CITGO to stop it's heating assistance program
CITGO is suspending it's free heating assistance program for low-income households.
A chairman for Citizens Energy Corporation, a non-profit group that partners with CITGO, made the announcement today. He says CITGO blames the falling oil prices and the world economic crisis for forcing the company to reevaluated all of its social programs. The oil program has provided hundreds of thousands of low-income families with fuel assistance in 23 states including Michigan.
There is no word on how long the postponement will last.
Kennedy urged those who have been helped by the program to write Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to share their stories.
CITGO is a Texas based oil subsidiary for the Venezuelan government.
There are several other organizations that help low-income families with heating assistance.
