The future has arrived at the Port of Detroit, Windsor Tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge that will use new radio frequency identification technology. United States Customs and Border Protection have completed technology upgrades that will automatically read and recognize special U.S. passports and the new enhanced Michigan driver's licenses and special tunnel/bridge cards. The upgrades are being implemented as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative program which will require U.S. and Canadian citizens to present secure documentation that confirms identity and citizenship when entering or re-entering the United States.
