Financial Fact Finder: simple steps to getting the most of your budget when it comes to grocery shopping.
When it comes to grocery shopping, Amanda Hilt has it all figured out. Amanda says "I had a cartload of groceries it was $174 and I paid $29 after coupons, and I had a couple of items I sent rebates in on so I am going to get some of that back too...typically I save anywhere between 50 and 60 percent off someone's normal grocery bill." When asked what will a weeks worth of groceries costs for her family of five, Amanda says "food cleaning supplies even diapers I try to stay under $50 a week."
But there has to be a secret right? A method as to why you and I are happy to save pennies and she's only spending pennies. So here it is: Amanda Hilt's secrets to slashing your grocery bill! Amanda says "its a combination of being organized and knowing what is a good price for something." She plans ahead, buys things when they are cheap...stocks up on them when they are really cheap. Since she has a stash at home, she is never forced to pay full price. "Once you find them on sale try to find a coupon," says Amanda.
And how do you find good coupons? Amanda says, "the best ones you find online from the manufacturer ones that you can print out. Those tend to be a limited supply so they tend to be more off than the Sunday paper."
But one coupon isn't enough...
Amanda says "most stores will let you take a store coupon and a manufacturer coupons." So you have a sale item, and then double dip on the coupons, but the savings don't end there. Amanda says "rebates are another great way because you can buy things, use a coupon on them, it could be on sale and than you have a rebate on it to, on that essense you could make money on something. There are items everyday you can walk away making money on." And in fact Amanda sometimes walks away having made money by going shopping!
