That got us wondering, what are your rights as a voter, if you have had to move because of a foreclosure. That is the focus of this Fact Finder report.
Should your finances be a factor in your right to vote?
The Democratic National Committee made claims that Republicans were going to use foreclosure lists to challenge Michigan voters on election day. The allegations got so serious, the case went to federal court. The lawsuit was settled Monday with both sides agreeing that being on a foreclosure list is not a reasonable basis for challenging a person's right to vote. That got us wondering, what are your rights as a voter, if you have had to move because of a foreclosure. That is the focus of this Fact Finder report.
I talked with the a spokesperson from the Secretary of State's Office and she tells me voters with homes in foreclosure may not lose their right to vote, or be challenged on their right to vote. Here are your rights, there are three different scenarios. If you've had to move with-in sixty days of an election, after September 5th in the case of the upcoming election you can still vote at your old polling place. If you moved before then, outside of your jurisdiction, you would have had to registered from your new address. But if you moved before the 60 days, and stayed within your jurisdiction, you just need to fill out a change of address/ voter registration form at your old polling place on election day.
This can be a little confusing, but the state has a great resource to answer your voting questions. By going to this link MICHIGAN SECRETARY OF STATE , it will tell you if you are registered, where you are registered, give you a map to the polling place, show you a sample of the very ballot you will see in the booth on election day. You can read the ballot proposals and the candidates, and even click on links to their websites so you can learn more about them. There's less than two weeks until the election and in the coming days we will be taking a closer look at some of the contested races and ballot issues to help you make an informed decision.
