MONTCALM CO. -- Two downstate men are behind bars and the search for two others continues in Montcalm County after a suspected larceny is witnessed by a passing deputy.

The deputy was on patrol during the overnight hours Saturday when he saw what appeared to be a stranded motorist at the intersection of West Carson City Road and South Sheridan Road in Fairplains Township.

Further observations led the deputy to suspect a larceny in progress of tires and rims. A traffic stop was attempted and the suspect vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Tracker, fled southbound on South Sheridan Road. The chase ended when the suspect vehicle left the roadway striking a road sign and trees near the intersection of West Fenwick Road and South Collins Road.

The people inside the vehicle ran away into the woods. Two of these suspects, an 18-year-old from Grand Rapids and an 18-year-old of Ada were located and arrested.  The men are facing charges including larceny, flee and elude and resisting arrest.  The stolen property was recovered. The other people in the vehicle were not located but the investigation continues.

Assisting with this incident were the Michigan State Police,Carson City Police, Ionia County Sheriff's Office and Montcalm County Sheriff's K-9 team.
