TRAVERSE CITY -- When a loved one comes home from the hospital, or if they're simply getting older and can't get around as easily, there are things you can do ensure their safety in your or their home.

Making a House Call this week is Tammy Tarsa, owner of Integrity Home Health Care in Traverse City.

Integrity Skilled Care, Inc., a branch of Integrity Home Health Care, received its Medicare accreditation last week and will now be able to provide care (Nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Home Health Aides) for seniors (65+) coming out of the hospital.

First, Tarsa said if a patient comes home with a walker or a wheelchair, check to ensure there is efficient space in the home for the walker. Are the doorways big enough? Does furniture need to be rearranged?

"Throw rugs can be a hazard, both to someone with a walker and to anyone who is a little unsteady or prone to tripping and falling," said Tarsa. "This is a definite concern in the home of seniors. Also consider stroke victims, Parkinson's sufferers, and similar conditions."

Tarsa also said to watch for those using oxygen tanks. Tarsa said the long oxygen hose needs to be set up so that it isn't a tripping hazard.

Another hazardous area is the bathroom. Is the person safe in the bathroom from falls and tripping? Do grab bars need to installed? Also, in the living area, is furniture in the way? This can be especially dangerous for a person who gets up in the night.

Tarsa also said to check your smoke detectors.

"For the hearing impaired, a smoke detector with a flashing light might be needed," said Tarsa.

She also said to have a plan ready. Is there an specific escape route in case of fire? How will they get out of the house and where will they go once they do?
