BOYNE CITY (AP) -- U.S. flags in Michigan are being lowered to honor a 20-year-old soldier from northern Michigan who was killed in Afghanistan.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder issued the order for Friday to honor Army Pvt. 2nd Class Jackie L. Diener (DY'-nur) II of Boyne City, who was based at Fort Drum, N.Y.

A service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Boyne City High School auditorium.

The Pentagon says Diener died Nov. 21 in Kandahar province after insurgents attacked his unit with small arms.

Diener was part of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

The governor's office says Diener joined the Army this year and had been deployed since September.
