TRAVERSE CITY -- An event at the Boardman River Nature Center in Traverse City offered up some tips on how to be eco-friendly this holiday season.

Saturday afternoon the Grand Traverse Conservation District hosted a 'Greening up the Holidays’ event. Tips were given on how to prepare the home this holiday with the environment in mind.

From buying presents to choosing wrapping paper -- this event provided a variety of alternatives to help green up this holiday season.

Boardman River Nature Center Education Assistant Erin Howard says, "People can start with recycling old gift wrap and reuse that. Also reuse cards that came from other people as place cards and decorations. People can really work on buying locally and natural products and buying gift cards."

The Boardman River Nature Center will host a family snowshoe hike this Wednesday from 5:30-7:00pm.  All ages are welcomed.

If you are interested in participating you can meet at the Commons Natural Area (Garfield Trailhead across from TBAISD), not at the Nature Center.

A $5 dollar donation is suggested and you can get 50% off snowshoe rentals at Brick Wheels if you are participating in a GTCD program.
