TRAVERSE CITY (AP) -- An agreement between a Traverse City based company and a downstate utility means the first large scale wind turbine production is set to begin.
Governor Granholm made the announcement Tuesday.
The purchase agreement was reached between Jackson based Consumers Energy and Heritage Sustainable Energy, which is based in Traverse City.
Northern Power Systems will build the direct drive wind turbines in Saginaw. The turbines will be used in Heritage's Wind Farm in the Upper Peninsula's Delta County and the power will be sold to Consumers Energy.
Heritage also plans to build another wind farm in Missaukee and Osceola Counties.
Under a 2008 law, 10 percent of the state's energy must come from renewable sources by 2015.
