Aging bridge getting replaced
PIGEON RIVER COUNTRY FOREST -- Visitors to the Pigeon River Country Forest will soon be greeted by detour signs, this as crews prepare to replace an aging bridge.
The bridge on Sturgeon Valley Road, which runs across the Pigeon River, is slated to be replaced beginning Monday, May 4.
The Otsego County Road Commission will set up detours around the closed bridge throughout the summer, which will affect user access to the Pigeon River Country Forest.
The Department of Natural Resources says all campgrounds, pathways and trailheads will remain open with the exception of a small segment of the Shingle Mill Pathway on the west side of the forest.
"It's an old bridge and it is a rather narrow bridge so replacing it is going to improve safety and it's a tired bridge and it's time to be replaced," said Robin Pearson of the DNR.
Construction is expected to last approximately 10 weeks.
