TRAVERSE CITY -- Chef Phil Murray may know who he is voting for this presidential election, but what about his chicken?

Phil is helping you create some of his favorite dishes in your own kitchen every week on UpNorthLive Tonight on ABC 29&8 at 6:30 p.m.

This week Phil shows us how to prepare and cut a chicken.

"Buying a whole chicken is the best thing you can do because it's nice and fresh," said Phil.

First, Phil said to cut the chicken's wings off. He suggested you save them and fry them up for some tasty chicken wings. Next, separate the legs and cut between the breast and legs, then cut skin off. Pull on thigh in between thigh bone to cut leg off. Repeat this on other side.

Next, remove skin. It should come off fairly easily. Phil said to cut right down the sternum, right to the bone. Scrape the bone with your knife to get all of the meat off. Leave joint on to keep tenderloin together.

"That's what we call a 'supreme breast,'" said Phil. He also said you can cut the large legs in half for extra pieces.

"If you buy a fresh chicken, it's like a third of the price and takes 2 minutes to cut up," said Phil. "And anything left over can make a nice broth. It's a meal that will extend your food budget."

Enjoy!

If you can't wait until next week for a recipe, or Phil's singing, stop in at Phil's On Front in downtown Traverse City. Phil's on Front is located at 236 East Front Street.
