MONTMORENCY COUNTY -- Twenty-three dogs and 6 miniature horses were removed from a home in the Montmorency County community of Hillman.

Pauline Hancock, of the Elk Country Animal Shelter says the dogs rescued included Miniature Dachshunds, English Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, and a couple of Huskies.

The animals did not have access to water. Some were being kept in a barn and others were in dog houses that did not have any bedding, Hancock said.

Hancock says there are 17 other animals inside the house that were not taken because they were not in immediate danger.

The case is under investigation and so far the Sheriff's office has not filed any charges.

The shelter is caring for the dogs and would welcome any donations, food or money, to help take care of the dogs.
