Winter storm spreading across the region
What could be the biggest winter storm of the season is moving across the midwest and the Great Lakes states. Some locations will see over 15" of snow by late Saturday. Roads are seriously icy in many counties. There is a Winter Storm Warning for all of northern Michigan through Saturday afternoon.
Snow totals by Saturday evening will be around 12" in Cadillac and Grayling, 5" in Ludington and Manistee, 13" in Grand Traverse County, 11" in the Kalkaska, Charlevoix, and Petoskey, 10" around Cheboygan, and 4-6" near Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie.
The storm center producing the snow also will generate high winds through the day Saturday. Gusts will be over 30 mph from the west and northwest. That means we'll have low wind chills, visibility issues, and drifting snow.
Saturday night, light snow is expected, but the weather story then turns toward colder temperatures. Saturday night will be bitter...with lows in the teens and in some towns single digits.
Sunday will be one of the coldest days we've experienced lately...about 10 degrees colder than Saturday. There will be some lake effect snow showers Sunday...meaning a few spots will get several more inches...but the snow will not be widespread. Fortunately, the wind will be light 5 to 15 mph on Sunday.
