Create designer style with ease and time-saving tricks

TRAVERSE CITY -- Tune in every Wednesday at 6:30 pm for "UpNorthLive ReVibe" on UpNorthLive Tonight on ABC 29&8.

Denine Dingeman, designer at Charitable Resale, teaches you to style with ease to affordably create desirable living spaces using cast-off items. She's teaming up with Dan Brady, "tricks-of-the-trade" painter at Dan Brady Painting and Wood Restoration. He brings you time-saving tricks and products that are easy to find and use.

This week, Dan and Denine are showing you how to ReVibe a cast-off mirror in four easy steps.

First, Denine said to pick your theme.

"Pull a design theme from something that expresses your personality," said Denine. "Consider how dated patterns or colors can ReVibe your mirror in a fresh, trendy way."

Four Steps to paint a designer-inspired mirror:

1. Plan: Gather mirror, sandpaper or deglosser, paintbrush, paint, and Frogtape

"Check for lead paint using a lead paint tester easily found at Northwoods Paint or any home improvement store," said Dan.

2. Prep: Sand or Degloss and Prime

"I know prepping isn't the first thing you want to do on your weekend project, but it is important," said Dan. "A really cool product is liquid deglosser... It's like liquid sandpaper."

3. Design direction: Create pattern or color scheme

"I just went around the house and found this old afghan that I got my inspiration from," said Denine. "It's got this chevron design that's really popular right now."

4. Apply: Pattern and paint

"With Frogtape, I masked out the chevron design," said Denine. "I picked a nice beach glass color that I liked... Painted it out, and pulled the tape off. Then, with another afghan that I had laying around, I cut it up and made pillows out of it."
