BAY HARBOR -- Michigan officials are now heading up the continued effort to cleanup contamination on Little Traverse Bay.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will assume the oversight of the cleanup at the former cement quarry, which is now the site of Bay Harbor resort.

The Little Traverse Bay CKD Release site is a former limestone and shale quarry and cement manufacturing facility near the City of Petoskey in Emmet County.

Cement kiln dust, or CKD, is a waste byproduct from the manufacturing of cement. Approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of CKD was left on the property after cement production ceased in the late 1980s..

CKD leachate is caustic and contains various metals generated when water comes into contact with CKD. Work to remediate the site started in 2005 under federal oversight.

The agreement reached by the DEQ, Michigan Department of the Attorney General and CMS Land Company and CMS Capital, LLC, transfers oversight of response actions at the Little Traverse Bay CKD Release site from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

The Agreement requires the continued operation and maintenance of collection systems along the shores of Lake Michigan to capture cement kiln dust leachate.
