NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- Colder air is poised to drop across Northern Michigan later Thursday through the weekend leading to a flare-up of lake effect snow for some spots.

A messy mix of rain/snow/drizzle is crossing Northern Michigan on our Valentine's Day with a general 1-4" of snowfall expected (heaviest totals across Northern Lower Michigan). That area of low pressure will continue eastward leading to an end to the snow this evening, but also swing winds northwesterly which will allow colder air to spill in through much of the upcoming weekend.

Friday will see temperatures struggling to around 20F in spots with lake effect snow showers becoming more numerous late in the day as cold air crossing the Great Lakes gains momentum. At this point, as winds shift more northerly Friday night/Saturday, the main spot for lake effect snow will be along/west of highway M-37 along the Lake Michigan shoreline counties including Leelanau, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Manistee, Mason and Oceana counties. Total lake effect snow from Thursday through Saturday night will push 4-6" in spots there with lighter amounts elsewhere.

High temperatures Saturday will struggle into the mid-teens, a good 10-15 degrees below normal.
