TRAVERSE CITY -- Even though  we are still officially in the winter season, this week doesn't feel like it.

That's why Coast Guard officials want to remind you to be safe if you plan on taking part in any ice related outdoor activities.

Temperatures are forecast to be well above freezing for much of this week... and with the recent warm up, a lot of ice has already begun to thaw and weaken.

Commander Scott Langum said, "any time you go out on the ice, we like to use this very simple acronym; ICE, I-C-E, intelligence, clothing and equipment.  Know the ice, know the conditions, wear the proper clothing and have the right equipment to keep yourself safe on the ice and help yourself get out of the ice if need be."

Officials say new, clear ice is strongest.  So if the ice appears gray or white, it has begun to thaw.

If you see standing water near-by, the ice is not safe, and even if the ice is newly formed, if it's less than two inches thick, it is not safe.
