Free Skywarn training classes are being held across Northern Michigan for interested residents.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- The National Weather Service will once again be offering severe weather spotter training for residents of almost every county across Northern Michigan.
Each spring, the National Weather Service Forecast Offices in Marquette, Gaylord, and Grand Rapids which cover our entire viewing area host these classes on various days across the region. The classes are free to attend and are very informative.
Weather spotters are critical not only to the National Weather Service but also the 7&4 Storm Team as the latest weather technology and tools are certainly helpful in breaking weather events, but to have a person on the ground reporting what is actually happening and what they are seeing is invaluable.
The classes are hosted by a meteorologist who gives a multi-media presentation on severe weather and the characteristics of severe thunderstorms, flooding events, tornadoes, etc... There is no need to pre-register and once certified, you will then officially become a spotter and possibly called upon in severe weather events. The classes typically last two hours or so. Weather spotters are a valued resource for the communities they live in, and help in warning decisions.
