Parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula got an early taste of wintry weather over the weekend.

MLive.com reports up to 3 inches of snow fell across the western Upper Peninsula from Friday night to Saturday morning, though it didn't stick around long.

The area's first snowfall of the season came a little earlier than usual. The National Weather Service says the average first date of measurable snowfall in the area generally is Oct. 17.

Eastern parts of the Upper Peninsula also saw some snow, but little or no accumulation.

Cooler temperatures were felt across Michigan over the weekend as well. Early Monday, freeze warnings were in effect in the southern half of the state.
