CHARLEVOIX COUNTY -- Two rivals, hours of basketball, and a whole lot of pink. All the elements needed to draw a large crowd to Charlevoix middle school to help raise money for local teachers battling breast cancer.

Seventh graders Julia Sherman and Nichole Hart, both from rival schools East Jordan and Charlevoix, each have a teacher fighting cancer. So they came up with the Play for a Cure event to show support.

"The East Jordan girls know what we're going through too, because they have the teachers to your going to breast cancer and Miss Putman is really enjoying this and I think she thinks it's really cool," Hart said.

Amy Putman is the coach of the 7th grade girls team and a teacher at Charlevoix Middle School. She has been fighting breast cancer all season long and has used her fight to inspire the girls on here team. Now theses student athletes want the chance to inspire her and two East Jordan teachers who were also diagnosed with cancer.

All proceeds from tonight's basketball game will go to local families and breast cancer research. And any fan in the stands will be treated to a fierce competition between rivals. These girls basketball teams against breast cancer.

"Now it becomes more than just athletic competition between two cities or two schools. It's two groups of girls, Two communities all playing for the same cause which is really neat to see," Charlevoix Middle School Principal Travis Garrett explained.
