TRAVERSE CITY -- In the past 24 hours a large gaping pothole on Garfield Road in Traverse City was flattening tires and frustrating drivers.

"Today's my day off and I was actually going to get an oil change, so, instead of getting my car maintenanced and repaired, I ended up getting a flat tire, so, very frustrating," said Heather Maxon who hit the pothole.

The hole was about 2 to 3 feet long, 1 foot wide and 6 to 8 inches deep.

When 7&4 News arrived on scene the hole took out tires on two separate vehicles in just ten minutes and we caught one of them on camera.

But those drivers weren't the only two victims.

The pothole swallowed tire after tire, 11 to be exact, and left them limping to the Bill Marsh Car Dealership parking lot, which ironically was next to the pothole.

"We had six vehicles come into our service departments yesterday for all kinds of pot hole related damage, blown tires, damaged wheels, vehicles knocked out of alignment, suspension damage and things like that," Co-Owner of Bill Marsh, Jamie Marsh said.

Three of the cars were still there when we arrived.

"We made a contact to the county yesterday about it and apparently they showed up this morning," Marsh said. "I'm sure that's not the only pothole in the county, but that one in particular obviously needs attention."

But for many cars the damage was already done and it could come with a heavy price tag.

"One wheel alone can be upwards of $1,000, plus a tire, you can be looking at $1,500, maybe more on certain vehicles, per wheel and tire combination in that kind of damage," Marsh said.
