TRAVERSE CITY -- Forget trial and error! Follow these steps so you can do it yourself the first time!

Tune in every Wednesday at 6:30 pm for "UpNorthLive ReVibe" on UpNorthLive Tonight on ABC 29&8.

Denine Dingeman, designer at Chairitable Resale, teaches you to style with ease to affordably create desirable living spaces using cast-off items. She's teaming up with Dan Brady, "tricks-of-the-trade" painter at Dan Brady Painting and Wood Restoration. He brings you time-saving tricks and products that are easy to find and use.

This week, Dan and Denine are showing you how to select wall color to paint the perfect wall.

Four Steps to paint the perfect wall:

1. Plan: Use manufacturer color swatches and purchase small samples and painting tools

"If you look at a blue or a purple or a red, they all eventually fade into greys," said Denine. "So if you're going to toward a certain color in your room scheme... always go a shade lighter because once you paint all four walls, they reflect off of each other and the room is probably going to look darker than you intended it to look."

2. Prep: Create larger swatches on construction paper

"Before painting a large wall, create larger swatches that you can compare against your furniture and consider in different types of lighting," said Dan.

3. Design Direction: Determine wall color based on room setting, lighting, personality

"Stumped on color? Use your wardrobe to help you with your palette," said Denine. "The colors you love to wear are easily transformed to put your personality in your living spaces."

4. Apply: Tape off areas to be masked (try Frogtape for razor sharp edges), and Paint!
