LANSING (AP) -- A Michigan lawmaker says he wants to create a special group focused on preventing violence in schools.

Democratic Rep. David Nathan of Detroit has introduced legislation that would create a statewide School Safety Commission.

House Bill 4269 directs the group to study and recommend policies Michigan schools should put in place to reduce violent incidents. The group would also determine and make recommendations to lawmakers on measures they can enact to promote school safety.

Nathan says many school districts have individual policies. But he says there is currently no statewide plan for schools to prevent or respond to violent incidents in schools, like December's shooting in Newtown, Conn. that left 20 students and six educators dead.
