CAMP GRAYLING -- The Michigan National Guard dropped 500 pound bombs over the Grayling Air Gunnery Range Thursday for a major training exercise.

Northern Strikes 2012 is the largest air and ground exercise in the state's history.

For the next two weeks, 17 units from nine different states along with soldiers from Latvia and Canada will participate in the training.

Troops went through a number of scenarios including rescuing a downed pilot. Fighter jets also dropped 500 pound bombs on specific targets.

Training will continue on the range through July 20th.
