Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Day
TRAVERSE CITY -- Seniors at Traverse City West Senior High have been practicing reading excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches.
They will be reading the speeches during the Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance day at the State Theatre on Monday, Jan. 21.
The event will feature a live performance from the nationally renowned Brazeal Dennard Chorale, one of America's oldest African-American choirs.
Senior Glynnis Pierce said being part of this experience has been life changing for her.
"Their lives were just filled with hate and just negative energy and everything was just all around them all the time," Pierce said. "I wish I could've been there sometimes just so I could've done my part to change it."
Senior Liam Thomas said he has learned a lot through reading Dr. King's words.
"In these speeches it's just a lot of him talking about peace and everyone is the same, so why can't we be treated that way," Thomas said. "It really makes you think about historical standpoints of what were people actually thinking back then."
Until Monday these students will be practicing their speeches in hopes that the words they recite will reach the ears and the hearts of others.
The Martin Luther King Jr. remembrance day event is free to the public and starts at 5:30 p.m on Monday, Jan. 21.
