GRAND TRAVERSE -- A festival in Grand Traverse County today was all about discovering why Traverse City is a dream destination for food.

It was Northwestern Michigan College's Winter Festival of Foods.  Folks came together to explore cooking techniques with demonstrations from area chefs.

Local specialty food artisans also were on hand to offer fresh tips and ideas.  They also passed out samples so folks could taste northern Michigan's delicious culinary scene.

Organizers say it's a great way to explore your passion for food, and learn new tricks from the professionals to use at home.

"They are going to pick up new recipes, tips on maybe how to use knives," said program organizer, Julie Doyal.  "We had a knife skills class this morning.  Ways to use certain foods together to mix flavors.  But then also they got a chance to see people in action.  So many times, the chef's, it's not what they cook but how they do it.  So you've got a lot of personality today. Definitely they get a lot of tastings."
