NEWBERRY (AP) -- Muskallonge Lake State Park near Newberry in Michigan's Upper Peninsula will host Saturday's Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race.

The mid-distance event had been held the past 13 years at Rainbow Lodge but that and much of a trail system were destroyed this year by a wildfire that swept through northern Luce County.

Held the first weekend in January, the race is one of the first of the mushing season and draws mushers from throughout the Midwest, Canada and Alaska.

Professional 12-dog and 8-dog teams will run 60-mile and 40-mile distances. Sports classes of 2-dog to 6-dog teams will run shorter distances.

Muskallonge Lake State Park is west of Sault Ste. Marie.
